Think back on your most memorable road trip.

I was not a big fan of road trips when we lived in Australia.

Before the time of GPS, they were fraught with stress and tension as we tried to navigate where we were going.

Then there was the boredom as the wide expanse of the Australian countryside passed us by. We’d listen to music, eat some snacks and sweets as we travelled the long distance.

Roads are different here in the UK. The environment changes more rapidly as we go. Gone are big sun parched brown fields that stretch on forever.

The hills are green here. And the road changes from wide to hold your breath narrow as you move from motorways to the countryside.

Drive three hours or so, and you’ll land in a place like York, or Oxford. A completely different city in size, atmosphere, history, character to the London we left behind.

I have to admit, still I don’t think much of the road trip itself. I don’t think they’re memorable but just a means to a more exciting destination.

There was one road trip we’d take almost every year around Christmas time. It was the 12 hour journey from Sydney to Melbourne to visit family.

We knew we were about half way when we reached Holbrook. It was a small inland town with a giant submarine hull half buried at their local park.

We’d stop there for a bathroom break and take some time to stretch our legs. We’d often eat lunch or an ice cream before heading back to our car to continue on our way.

Our boy used to love playing on the submarine when he was little.

I once wrote that if I had to take a road trip, I’d take that long drive to Melbourne again. Despite the boredom. There were Christmas celebrations and family at the other end of it.

Now I know I can be in a totally different country if we drove for twelve hours in this part of the world.

Now I’m not so bored during road trips as everything is so new and different.

I still think what makes it most memorable is the destination at the end.

  2. Road Trips are really memorable. Listening to music and driving your car on a long silent road is best to relax yourself.

  4. That was quite vivid. Comparing a road trip in Australia vs the UK was very interesting to a Canadian reader.

    1. We’ve never been to Canada! I suppose you’d also have wide expanse that stretch on forever. 😁

      1. Yes, yes…but its not scary like Australia. Theres rolling hills, forests and creeks and vegetation and plenty of little farming towns dotting the landscape.

When I picture the Aussie outback, I think of miles and miles of desolate red earth. Like Mars. If your car breaks down out there, good luck finding help.

Although I hear that Saskatchewan (prarie province in the middle of Canada) is one big flat wheat field that goes on forever.

      2. That’s pretty much the trip from Sydney to Melbourne. Big expanse of flat land and the occasional hill!

  5. I’m not a fan of road trips. I do better if I’m driving. I tend to want to look at all the scenery which makes me a little queasy.

    1. I get car sick sometimes too. But it’s the boredom that usually gets me.

  6. A totally different experience for you, Aggie, than in Australia. I’m not a fan of motorway driving, but always prefer to take diversions to places with interesting names. You can imagine, this doesn’t always go down well with my driving husband. He just wants to get there!

    1. Haha! We’re enjoying whatever we come across at the moment. But you’re right. The motorway isn’t quite as interesting!

    1. Haha! Yes both your prompt and bloganuary’s prompt has revealed something. I would love to know too.

I think I’d like to explore this country more. There are some exquisite areas we haven’t been to yet. Would love to explore eastern Europe too! We’ll see what the new year holds.

      1. I think your want for exploration may mean you’re starting to feel settled in, in London. Congratulations, that’s a process that can take a while. Eastern Europe is si very interesting, I agree. And all the pockets of different cultures and languages in the British Isles!

      2. Maybe. I do feel very comfortable in London. It’s been a significant global city for thousands of years, and we’re loving our time here.

  8. I love roadtrips now as an adult and can experience it with my little one. I hear you on how the unchanging scenery can get tedious after a while. I would love to visit and tour Australia one day! 🙏

    1. It is a big country! Especially compared to Europe. So glad to hear you enjoy the time with your little one. They are precious moments!
