There. I did it.
I recited my poem in a tiny bookshop café off Bermondsey Street in front of a room full of strangers.
They were encouraging. Their applause polite.
Would I do it again? We’ll see.

Oh, yay! Congrats. That’s a big accomplishment. And I have a story about why reading your work aloud is so important. I read a prose poem of mine at a lit festival and a friend said she liked it, said she reads for a poetry journal and I should submit it. I said, well it’s more of a prose poem, not really poetry. She said, well, it sounds like poetry to me. Long story short, it’s being published in that journal, this spring! Of course, reading aloud is also good for community-building, honing the voice (and all the poetic stuff) in a piece–and, yes, to make us just a teensy bit scared! Good for you, Aggie!

Oh congratulations to you too!! Well done for getting published. More importantly to putting your heart and truth out there for the world to see! How exciting!
This was just an open mic night at a London bookstore. But they managed to create a welcoming and safe space for performers/poets. It was a lovely evening.
