My mother left all that she knew when she married my father. She left her friends, family and the country where she was born.
It was her great adventure. That moment when she said goodbye to her safe harbour to experience the new and untested in distant lands.
But it must have been hard for the mother and father she left behind. There must have been days of longing and loneliness. A treasuring of moments and memories I was not aware of while I was growing up.
Because after my grandmother died, I received two gifts from her estate. A diamond and sapphire ring. And a pile of photos from my childhood.
Every holiday. Birthday. Happy moment. Before the era of Instagram and Whatsapp, my mother sent captured snippets of our lives to my grandmother with a brief description on the back of the photos.
And my grandmother kept every one. All her life.
These photos are her memorable gift to me. A love letter from beyond the grave. Proof that said:
“I loved you. And I missed you.”

For Bloganuary – Day 9. What is the most memorable gift you have received?

I keep the cards, drawings and photos of my grandchildren. Precious that you were given them after she was gone.

That was very special. I only have 5-8 photos from my childhood, so yours are a treasure for sure.

Thank you. My grandmother must have kept them safe. Most haven’t faded too much.

Although painful, it also brought back a beautiful memory. “A gift from beyond the grave”.
